Although Benjamin Franklin wasn’t necessarily the poster-child for warding off women’s hair loss, his ideology on prevention has essentially served to be the basis of new advances in modern medicine!
Over the years, we have become a more savvy society when it comes to prevention. We learned that changing our diets and lifestyles results in ultimately healthier bodies and longer life-spans. Why not look at treating our hair in the same way?
Although we see many women who have already experienced quite a bit of loss, the importance of treating hair loss early is key! If you are seeing signs such as a slightly widening hair part, a thinner ponytail, or a shimmer of scalp peering through a once completely covered hairline, it’s likely you are experiencing hair loss.
It’s true that once the scalp is visible, up to 50% of your hair density has already been lost! Because female-pattern hair loss (aka Adrogenetic Alopecia) is progressive, it gets worse over time. As more and more hairs become “affected” they eventually go into hibernation, so to speak. In this dormant state, it is more difficult to fully restore a hair. It may also be helpful to know that 90% of female-pattern hair loss is genetic, so it’s possible to tell if you will have a genetic predisposition to losing hair just by looking at your parents and/or siblings. The key is to start treatments early (before a significant amount of loss has already occurred) and nip hair loss in the bud. Your future self will then be able to enjoy your lovely locks as well.
If you haven’t identified any signs of thinning but are worried about future hair loss, there are ways you can help prevent the little follicles from falling. Maintaining a healthy diet of essential vitamins and minerals; such as iron, copper, zinc, folate, and vitamins A, B, E, and C will aid in providing proper nutrition to a growing hair. Limiting damaging styling practices such as ammonia/peroxide coloring, heated styling tools, or wearing hair pulled back tightly is also important in keeping hairs happy.
Doing the above will certainly help keep your hair healthy and growing strong, however, if you have already started to notice a more prominent part or a slightly less hairy hairline, you might need a little boost in your prevention routine.
