womens hair lossIn the United States alone, up to 21 million women are experiencing hair loss. Hair loss can be caused by a number of factors including but not limited to low iron levels, low oxygen levels, chemotherapy treatment, and genetics. However, one generation of women is seeing an increased number of those suffering from hair loss: millennials.

According to ABC News,, hair loss among millennials, the generation that is now in their twenties and thirties, is an increasing phenomenon. What's interesting about this is that dermatologists believe that hair loss may not be more common among millennials than that of older generations. Rather, older generations may simply have hidden the loss of their hair more effectively.

Despite this, until studies prove hair loss to be as common in older generations as it is for Generation Y, the increased cases of hair loss found by dermatologists and hairdressers alike will continue to be concerning.

But what is it that's causing millennial women to lose their hair?

Differences In Millennial And Gen X / Boomer Hair Loss

Common causes of hair loss in women are genetics and chemicals. Often times a woman can tell if her hair loss is caused by her genes as hair thinning will appear in other family members. Additionally, chemicals either ingested in the body through smoking or experienced through chemotherapy can often result in womens hair loss.

However, these are factors that affect Generation Y, Generation X, and the Baby Boomer generation together. While smoking hasn't disappeared from Generation Y, it would certainly make more sense for increased hair loss cases to be present in Generation X when the number of Americans who smoked in 1965 was as high as 42%.

So according to researchers, mental health and stress levels. More millennials are being diagnosed with depression and anxiety than any other generation. But, it must also be noted that the role of psychology in the everyday lives of Americans has also changed. While once taboo, psychology is considered a daily part of many American lives.

Still, millennial stress is unique in that it may be caused by a variety of factors including the low employment rate, college costs, the housing market, and social media. Hair loss is a common result of increased stress and irritability.

Treatments For Hair Loss

Fortunately, there are ways to combat hair loss. Therapies such as Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP) and Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) can help stimulate hair growth and help your hair return to its natural fullness. Topical products can add additional assistance to stopping hair loss in women.

While the cause for increased hair loss in millennials is thus far unknown until further studies are conducted, treatment for womens hair loss is possible. For more information regarding womens hair loss and hair loss treatment, contact Medi Tresse today.
