Follicular Unit Transplantation

A Surgical Treatment For Hair Restoration

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) is a surgical procedure that restores hair growth in an area of concern by moving a strip of hair-bearing scalp from the back of the donor area. The area removed is about 2cm wide, and ranges from 15-20cm long. FUT is sometimes also known as “strip surgery,” in reference to the portion of the scalp being transplanted.
The exact size of the strip of hair-bearing scalp will depend on the number of grafts required by the patient. Individual grafts can contain between 1-5 follicles. Because the average person contains 2-3 per graft, we can expect a 1000 graft procedure to contain between 2000-3000 hairs that we can use to restore an area impacted by hair loss.

The strip is handled by a technician responsible for dividing it into your individual grafts. Your surgeon will carefully prepare the treatment area and create recipient sites for those grafts, which are then placed by the technician.

While this is not the only transplant treatment, it can be preferred for those patients who need a higher number of grafts for their procedure. This approach also avoids extensive shaving of the back of the scalp area. Treatments can typically be completed within 4-6 hours. Local anesthesia is provided for comfort; patients can remain awake during treatment. We can provide a sedative to patients to help them relax throughout the procedure.

Before your FUT occurs, your doctor will meet with you and review the details of your consultation to confirm that this is the hair restoration procedure that you desire. You will have the opportunity to see a template drawing of the hairline and treatment area, to approve before the procedure begins. From here, we take baseline photos of the affected areas and then bring you into the room where the procedure takes place. Before placing harvested grafts, we will draw the hairline and make sure we have your approval to proceed.

FUT FAQ

What Are The Benefits Of Follicular Unit Transplantation For Treating Hair Loss?

By performing FUT, we are able to graft more hairs during a single procedure, as the “strip” of hair-bearing scalp can provide us with more grafts to place in one procedure. This approach to treatment also avoids extensive shaving of the back of the scalp.

What Will My FUT Involve?

Before your procedure begins, you and your doctor will review what you discussed during consultation to confirm that this is the hair treatment you desire. You will have the opportunity to review and approve drawn templates of the hairline and treatment area. After everything is approved, you will proceed to the treatment room where the donor area of your scalp will be carefully shaved down to ¼ inch before the area is treated with local anesthetic. From here, your surgeon will carefully remove the strip providing us with follicles for treatment, and the technician will dissect the strip into individual donor grafts. The recipient area will be prepared by your surgeon before your technician places the grafts to restore your hair. The treatment areas will be evaluated by your surgeon to confirm the procedure was a success, and you will receive post-treatment instructions before departing.

How Long Will FUT Take To Complete?

Your FUT should be completed within 4-6 hours.

Am I Really Going To Be Awake During The Procedure?

Local anesthetic is used to prevent discomfort and you will remain awake during your procedure. We can provide a sedative to make you comfortable throughout the procedure. Many patients choose to relax and watch a movie as work takes place.
