If you’ve been concerned about losing your hair, you may be considering a hair transplant in Boston or Worcester. Hair transplants bring many benefits, from boosting self-esteem to natural looking results. But how do you know you’re choosing the best type of hair transplant surgery?

It can be daunting at first glance to see all the options available to you. We’re here to talk you through each one and point you in the right direction. From traditional Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) to the revolutionary No Shave FUE, there are many possibilities to consider. The one you choose will depend on the type and extent of your hair loss, along with your budget, preferences, and doctor recommendations.

Types of Hair Transplants to Consider

The main types of hair transplants that we specialize in here at Northeast Hair Restoration include:

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

This surgical procedure, AKA “strip surgery,” takes a strip of hair-bearing scalp from the back of the donor area. The size of the strip depends on how many grafts you need (individual grafts contain one to five follicles). The average man needs two or three per graft. Translation: a 1,000-graft procedure should contain between 2,000 and 3,000 hairs.

If you need a high number of grafts and don’t want extensive shaving to the back of your scalp, this is the preferred treatment. All in all, it takes four to six hours to complete, with a local anesthesia applied to keep you comfortable.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

Like FUT, FUE moves individual follicles from the donor area to another location rather than strips. The hairs are carefully extracted and implanted using a circular punch tool no bigger than the diameter of a pencil point. This tool helps to reduce the possibility of scarring.

This treatment tends to be more popular than FUT due to:

  • Minimal chance for scarring
  • Comfortable treatment
  • Follicles can be taken from areas other than the scalp

No Shave FUE

No Shave FUE is a revolutionary approach that uses specialized technology to extract individual grafts. There is no need to shave the surrounding hairs, resulting in the most natural looking hair transplant.

This is the latest iteration of the original Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) that rose to popularity in the 2000s as being a less painful method than the strip method (FUT). With the FUE method, follicles must be removed with a small punch, one at a time. The donor area has to be completely shaven in order to successfully perform the extraction.

The big claim to fame with this method is that no shaving is involved. This is especially beneficial to men with longer hair, who now don’t have to wait till that awkward hair cut grows out.

However, not all hair transplant surgeons offer the No Shave FUE. This specialized procedure is only being done by a few surgeons around the country. Rest assured, our respected doctors — Dr. Thomas Brand and Dr. Mark DiStefano – are skilled in this revolutionary procedure.

Non-Surgical Treatments

We also offer non-surgical treatments, such as Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy and Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) to heal the follicle and reverse miniaturization while growing thicker, healthier hair.

  • LLLT: Cold-beam lasers can restore hair growth while improving overall hair health.
  • PRP: This is a non-surgical treatment that isolates platelets and growth factors from the patient’s blood, followed by an injection of plasma into the scalp to stimulate follicle repair.
  • Topical Finasteride: These 5-alpha reductase inhibitors can treat receding hairlines or balding in men. Taken once a day in tablet form, topical finasteride blocks male hormone production in the scalp that is preventing hair growth.
