Celebrating Medi Tresse's 10-Year Anniversary

With a decade of transformative journeys in women's health, 2025 marks 10 years since the birth of Medi Tresse.

Achieving a 10-year anniversary is more than just a milestone—it’s a reflection of years of hard work and a tribute to vision and resilience. With a decade of transformative journeys in women's health led by pioneers in non-surgical hair restoration, 2025 marks 10 years since the birth of Medi Tresse.

What started out as one woman’s personal challenge of hair loss evolved into a mission to change how women experience hair restoration and reclaim their confidence. This vision brought together science and compassion, fueling the spark that would become Medi Tresse, a leader in women’s hair restoration in New England and New York.

The Intersection of Science and Compassion

From its humble beginnings, Medi Tresse has grown to encompass four locations with nine providers performing more than 12,000 treatments on 8,000 patients – and counting. Today, let’s pause to reflect on the history of the company that has transformed the non-surgical hair restoration field for women.

With its patient-centered philosophy, compassionate and skilled specialists, and holistic approach, Medi Tresse has become more than a hair restoration clinic. It has evolved into a trusted sanctuary for women who not only need treatment, but crave understanding, empowerment, and confidence as well.

Before the Brand: The Early Years of Female Hair Loss Treatment

Medi Tresse has enjoyed its status as a leading hair restoration clinic in Boston and beyond for years now. It wasn’t always that easy. The story starts with a single vision of the renowned hair regrowth specialist Dr. Mary Wendel, a seasoned internal medicine physician with more than 35 years of experience.

Dr. Mary Wendel - Boston Magazine's Top Doctors - women's hair loss specialist - Boston, MA

When she faced challenges with her own hair loss experience at the age of 50, she was surprised by the lack of effective, female‑focused solutions for hair loss. At the time, male pattern baldness was getting all the attention – not to mention research and treatment. This left women wondering: what about me?

Dr. Wendel set out to change that, investing her time and medical expertise into developing treatment options specific to female hair loss. Her personal and professional journey began in 2002 when she first started seeing female patients at a hair restoration practice in Worcester, MA.

  • Over the years, it became clear to Dr. Wendel that women were still going to med spas at great expense to address their hair loss but weren’t getting the proper treatment they deserved.
  • That’s when she knew there had to be another option, not only to address the hair loss itself but the fear and stigma surrounding it. Dr. Wendel launched the first Medi Tresse clinic in Wellesley, MA in June 2015 – the first medical practice in the Northeast exclusively for female hair loss.
  •  Her goal was to provide females with choices that make them feel empowered, and ultimately give them compassion and hope.
  • Ten years later, and that initial goal is still the driving force of the practice.

The Next Chapter: Advancing Treatment, Expanding Expertise

As the years wore on, it was apparent that the Medi Tresse model was revolutionizing women’s hair‑loss care. From hour‑long medical consultations and in‑depth scalp evaluations (trichoscopy), to personalized diagnostic testing and evidence‑based treatments, the difference was clear. The specialists at Medi Tresse made a commitment to understanding each woman’s unique story, rather than just treating symptoms.

Treatments have certainly changed and advanced over the years, but so too have the protocols.

What was once a male-dominated field has transformed into a female-focused approach centered on personalization and minimally invasive options. This is a meaningful change for those who once hesitated out of fear or discomfort.

All based in clinical research and refined by Dr. Wendel’s personal insight, Medi Tresse embraced the latest treatment protocols afforded by science, from painless PRP and low‑level laser therapy (LLLT) to scalp treatments and supplements. No shave FUE procedures started opening up doors to women with long hair. And even medical-grade, at-home care lines began to transform the patient experience, empowering women to take a more active role in their hair care between clinical visits.

Hand in hand with treatment advances came an increased awareness and understanding of the various causes of hair loss. Medi Tresse led the charge in exploring and understanding conditions such as:

Each condition brings its own causes, symptoms, and treatment protocols, challenging the one-size-fits-all-approach. In addition, the practice is seeing more and more patients with diverse causes of hair loss in recent years, including scarring alopecia, and more patients taking weight loss drugs like Wegovy and Ozempic.

With more causes and options, there is a demand for more awareness, and that’s where Medi Tresse offers value.

Growth With Purpose: Medi Tresse Expands their Footprint

As Medi Tresse continued to grow, its reputation for compassionate, evidence-based care never dimmed.

  • In 2018, leadership expanded to New York with the addition of renowned hair restoration expert Dr. Mark DiStefano. A highly-accomplished physician, Dr. DiStefano has more than four decades of surgical and clinical experience that solidify him as a recognized leader in hair restoration surgery.
  • Also in 2018, the Scarsdale/Westchester clinic opened, introducing the growing brand to women in the New York metro area.
  • In 2019, Medi Tresse partnered with its sister site, Northeast Hair, which has locations in Boston and Worcester.
  • In 2020, we opened our Worcester office.
  •  In late 2022, Medi Tresse opened a flagship location in Manhattan that became the first medical practice in New York City exclusively focused on female hair loss.
  • In 2022, Dr. Wendel was named one of Boston Magazine’s Top Doctors.

Key to Medi Tresse’s growth is the strength and consistency of its clinical leadership team that includes:

  • Board-certified physicians
  • Highly-trained nurse practitioners
  • Network of clinical specialists across all locations

Each provider is trained in Dr. Wendel’s proprietary protocols to ensure all patients receive the same quality of care regardless of geography.

More Options, More Pitfalls

Medi Tresse has seen hair loss become more complicated over the years in spite of all the innovations surrounding it. The availability of more treatments brings an increased responsibility for oversight when it comes to proper diagnosis on the part of hair loss specialists. It takes detailed knowledge not just of hair loss causes but the possible side effects of prescription medications as well.

For instance, with the rise in telehealth platforms such as Hims, there are more and more “easy” options for patients looking for a quick fix. However, the lack of personalized attention and diagnosis can be alarming, especially when it comes to lack of disclosure on side effects related to medication.

The FDA recently issued a warning about adverse effects related to popular hair loss products available through telehealth platforms. Men reported side effects of topical finasteride, including dizziness, depression, and low libido, but were not properly informed of those side effects.

Medi Tresse continues its mission of personalized care to keep consumers and patients safe. Having a hair loss specialist involved in hair care allows for personalized diagnosis and treatment plans tailored to each individual’s condition.

Unlike quick telehealth fixes, hair loss specialists at Medi Tresse pride themselves on ensuring thorough evaluation, proper disclosure of potential side effects, and safer management of treatments.

Looking to the Future: Where Does Medi Tresse Go From Here?

As we reflect on the last 10 years, we can’t help but look ahead with hope. Continued growth into new locations is a strong possibility, led by the support of experienced clinical teams rooted in the mission of Medi Tresse.

Product innovation will continue to be a focus, particularly in the development of new, proven products designed for at-home use.

The Medi Tresse team will continue to embrace new technologies, developing and refining the latest techniques to ensure the safety and confidence of our patients.

And, as always, we will continue to prioritize educational outreach to raise awareness about female hair loss through webinars and blogs.

We welcome you to take the journey with us, as we look ahead eagerly to the next 10 years and beyond.
