How Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) Works

Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) provides a safe, comfortable treatment option to restore thinning hair and address visible hair loss. We can safely use these lasers to promote hair restoration for patients with Androgenic Alopecia (Female Pattern Hair Loss), Traction Alopecia, Scarring Alopecia, and Telogen Effluvium.

LLLT has been evaluated in a number of studies and found effective at treating hair loss in both men and women. The research has shown patients enjoyed thicker, healthier hair growth and more numerous hair shafts, overall showing that treatment was safe and effective.

The lasers used in LLLT are considered cold-beam lasers. These forms of lasers are not capable of burning skin, making prolonged use safe for patients. Laser therapy has been used in medical care for more than 50 years. Changes in technology made this laser treatment effective for treating hair loss, and LLLT has been cleared by the FDA for fighting female hair loss.

How Do I Start LLLT Therapy?

Your first appointment at Medi Tresse is a medical consultation. You will meet with a medical professional who is completely knowledgeable about the causes of female hair loss and all the scientifically proven treatments available. During the consultation, the medical staff will determine if LLLT Therapy is an appropriate treatment option for you.

At Medi Tresse, we have evaluated many of the LLLT devices available for the treatment of female hair loss and during your consultation, we will determine which device would be best for you.

Low-Level Laser Therapy FAQ

Are there any LLLT side effects?

Low-level laser therapy has a very high safety profile. And, because it uses cool beam lasers, there is no risk of burning the skin or scalp. Keep in mind is that some patients occasionally complain of their hair drying out a bit initially after treatment. A very small percentage of patients have reported headaches, but this is fortunately very rare.

The only contraindication for use would be people who have been diagnosed with skin cancer of the scalp, head, or neck. LLLT does not cause cancer and it has never been proven that LLLT has any effect on cancer cells.

However, in theory, LLLT does support cell replication. We here at Medi Tresse would rather play it safe when it comes to patients with a history of skin cancers of the scalp, head, or neck. We advise those patients to work with their dermatologist to determine if use of the LLLT device is appropriate. For everyone else, LLLT could be a viable option for you in treating hair loss and thinning hair. You can come in for a consultation and speak with one of our Medi Tresse hair loss specialists.

Is It Really Safe To Use Lasers On My Scalp For Hair Growth?

Low-intensity lasers were a part of numerous medical treatments before LLLT became a treatment option for male and female hair loss. Because these are what we know as cold-beam lasers, they can be used without creating a risk for burning your skin.

How Does Low-Level Laser Therapy Help Me Recover After Losing Hair?

The low-level laser lights used for treatment stimulate hair follicle cells. The response from prolonged exposure to these lights can lead to the production of more hair shafts, and treatment can reduce inflammation and produce healthier hair growth.

Has LLLT Been Researched?

Studies of the effectiveness and safety of LLLT have shown that treatment can lead to both the growth of thicker, healthier hair as well as more hair shafts. These studies also show no significant negative side effects from treatment.

Can I Really Take Home A Device That Lets Me Engage In LLLT At Home?

Medi Tresse offers multiple products that patients can use in the comfort of their own home. You can talk to us about purchasing the LaserCap HD (224 Diodes), the LaserCap HD+ (300 Diodes), or the HairMax® LaserBand 82.
