Ketoconazole shampoo – brand name Nizoral – is a potent DHT blocker. Excessive DHT is one the causes of androgenic alopecia. Ketoconazole shampoos come in two strengths: 1% – over the counter, and 2% – prescription.
Patients should only use ketoconazole shampoo once or twice a week, regardless of potency.
Over the counter Nizoral can be a good option for anyone with androgenic alopecia, or female pattern hair loss. Ketoconazole shampoos may also have anti-inflammatory properties, which could possibly benefit those experiencing other types of hair loss. We sometimes recommend 1% strength ketoconazole shampoo to patients with a dry scalp or dandruff as well.
We often prescribe the 2% strength ketoconazole shampoo to patients experiencing severe dryness or seborrheic dermatitis. Ketoconazole shampoos can potentially dry out hair, so it is crucial to apply a good conditioner after use.
In short, ketoconazole shampoo with an added conditioner once or twice a week may be beneficial for any woman with known androgenic alopecia.
