When we think of prescriptions for hair loss, we often think of finasteride, but it is rare for us to utilize finasteride for female hair loss. However, for certain types of hair loss, such as Scarring Alopecia or Alopecia Areata, there are times we may use steroids or antibiotics as part of the treatment plan.
During the consultation, we would also want to discuss any current medications the patient is using as many prescription medications can impact the health of our hair, especially birth control and hormone replacement therapy. Some of these medications can actually have a positive impact, and whenever possible, we will provide recommendations so that you can discuss your options with your prescribing practitioner. We would never advocate stopping or switching a prescription medication without first consulting with the prescribing practitioner.
