One of the easiest ways to mask thinning hair is the use of hair extensions or hair clips.  We have seen many patients that come to our practice and either have a history of using these products or are currently using them.  The appeal is understandable, as it is a quick way to add the appearance of volume or thickness to your hair.  However, hair extensions can potentially cause further hair loss.

It is important to understand that the amount of time hair extensions are in will play a big role in how potentially damaging they can be.  If you are using little hair clips for a little added boost for the occasional night out, there is not much cause for concern.  Unfortunately, most hair extension methods connect synthetic or real hair directly to your hair shafts.  Some of these systems stay in for months at a time, and this constant tension on your follicles can cause traction alopecia.  Overtime this damage can become non-reversible.  When treated early, traction alopecia is reversible with hair loss treatments like Low Level Laser Therapy and Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy.

A good rule of thumb that we like to follow is that any hair extension system that is going to stay in for more than a week is too long.  If you are looking for products that can mask hair loss without damaging your follicles, we recommend Infinity Fibers, as they are micro-fibers that will not put tension on your hair.

If you have any questions about hair extension use, do not hesitate to reach out to our office.
