What Is Low Level Laser Therapy?

Low Level Laser Therapy, or LLLT, is an effective non-surgical hair regrowth treatment for women’s hair loss. LLLT uses laserlight or low-level light that thickens existing hair, but also increases the number of hairs in the growth phase. LLLT is beneficial in the treatment of Androgenic Alopecia (Female Pattern Hair Loss), Traction Alopecia, and Telogen Effluvium.

How Does Low Level Laser Therapy Work?

As mentioned, LLLT stimulates hair follicle cells to grow in the scalp and increases cellular activity around the follicle through non-invasive light treatments. Low Level Laser Therapy also decreases inflammation so existing hairs can grow thicker and stronger.

How Long Has LLLT Hair Therapy Been Around?

LLLT has been used in various medical specialties for over 50 years. However, with the advancements in laser technology over the last five years, studies have demonstrated amazing results when used for the treatment of hair loss in women.

Is LLLT a Safe Treatment?

While the thought of lasers may sound scary, LLLT is safe and is FDA cleared for the treatment of hair loss. Unlike most cosmetic lasers, LLLT is a “cold-beam” laser. This means that there is no risk of burning the skin.

LLLT Hair Loss Treatment Effectiveness and Studies

There have been numerous studies showing the effectiveness of LLLT as a treatment for hair loss. Here are a couple of the more recent studies:

Examining the Safety and Efficacy of Low-Level Laser Therapy for Male and Female Pattern Hair Loss: A Review of the Literature, 2020

A literature search through several databases (PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Cochrane Trials) were completed to identify original articles evaluating LLLT hair regrowth effectiveness.

Result: The research that was performed led to the conclusion that LLLT was effective and safe treatment for both men and women’s hair loss.

Efficacy and Safety of a Low-level Laser Device in the Treatment of Male and Female Pattern Hair Loss: A Multicenter, Randomized, Sham Device-controlled, Double-blind Study, 2014

Randomized, double-blind multicenter study (including Harvard, MIT, Cleveland Clinic)

Result: Statistically significant improvement in hair density in the treatment group. Hair shafts were both more numerous as well as thicker in about 95% of the treatment group. No significant negative side effects.
